Problem & primary user

Rent is often cash with disputed records. UK has tenancy deposit schemes; Nigerian tenants struggle to prove payment.

Primary user

"Mr. Adebayo, a landlord in Abeokuta with six tenants who writes receipts in a notebook tenants lose."

Geographic scope: National-level

Goals

User goal: Issue digital receipts tenants can save and forward.

Business goal: Landlords pay monthly; property managers buy multi-unit plans.

Success: Landlord issues receipt; tenant views history.

Market context

Question
Answer
Who pays
Landlords pay monthly; property managers buy multi-unit plans.
Why not WhatsApp
Handwritten receipts get lost; WhatsApp photos are disputed.
Design focus
Landlord issues PDF receipt; tenant saves history on phone.

Competitors to check:

  • Paper receipt book (default)
  • Bank transfer screenshot (no formal receipt)
  • Property proptech (often Lagos-focused)

Validate before you design

  • "Walk me through the last time this happened."

  • "What would make you trust this on a cheap Android phone?"
  • "What would stop you from using this every week?"

Features & scope

v1 · three features

  2. Issue receipt after each rent payment
  3. Tenant views and downloads receipt history

Out of scope

  • Eviction workflow
  • Mortgages
  • 100-unit enterprise

Flow 4 · Unhappy path

Trigger the unhappy path edge case and link to that screen.

Design system

Colour
You choose. Keep it simple and readable.
Type
You choose. Keep body text easy to read on a phone.
Tone
Design for your user, not for a tech audience.

Reuse on every screen:

  • Primary button (active and disabled states)
  • Input field (empty, filled, and error states)
  • Card or list item used across the app
  • Navigation bar with correct labels and icons
  • Empty state: what the screen looks like with no data
