Problem & primary user

JAMB is Nigeria's university gate exam. US students use SAT apps; JAMB needs CBT-style practice on low-end Android phones.

Primary user

"Fatima, an 18-year-old in Sokoto retaking JAMB who studies at night on her phone."

Geographic scope: National-level

Goals

User goal: Practise one subject in short CBT-style sessions with instant feedback.

Business goal: Subscription for subject packs; schools buy bulk access before exam season.

Success: User completes timed mock and sees weak topics.

Market context

Question
Answer
Who pays
Student subscriptions; schools buy batch access before exam season.
Why not WhatsApp
Students use PDF past questions with no CBT timer or feedback.
Design focus
One subject CBT lane with timer and weak-topic summary. Niche down.

Competitors to check:

  • uLesson, EduPadi (broad exam prep)
  • Paper past questions (default)
  • Lesson centres (offline)

Validate before you design

Interview 3–5 people who match your primary user. Update this brief if interviews contradict it. Do not start hi-fi until you complete the confirmation below.

Interview prompts

  • "Walk me through the last time this happened."
  • "What did you use instead? WhatsApp, paper, or nothing?"
  • "What would make you trust this on a cheap Android phone?"
  • "What would stop you from using this every week?"

Features & scope

v1 · three features

  1. Pick one subject and practise in timed CBT mode
  2. Review answers with short explanations
  3. Weekly mock score tracker

Out of scope

  • Live tutors
  • All subjects day one
  • JAMB registration

Design system

Colour
You choose. Keep it simple and readable.
Type
You choose. Keep body text easy to read on a phone.
Tone
Design for your user, not for a tech audience.

Reuse on every screen:

  • Primary button (active and disabled states)
  • Input field (empty, filled, and error states)
  • Card or list item used across the app
  • Navigation bar with correct labels and icons
  • Empty state: what the screen looks like with no data
